History: Mamoru was a middle schooler whose parents spent too much time away due to work issues from birth to properly pay attention to him. During his life, he believed himself to be happy. Trading away basic needs like emotional comfort or friendship in exchange for a life where all his needs were taken care of, he grew up thus as a person of average morality, neither too hot nor too cold.

But, that changed when he made his true first friendship. Realizing his need of others, he began to increase slowly but surely his circle of friends, and to truly enjoy everything life had to offer. That is, until his very first friend, the one who had introduced him to the rest of classmates, began to be bullied by their Karate-club seniors.

At first, they all agreed to stick and protect him. But, after one of them was dispatched next week to the hospital due to a dislocated arm in an 'assault where no Social Cameras could clearly identify the culprit' and another got a broken nose and lost a few teeth in similar circumstances as he went home, all bravado was lost and soon their circle of friends became smaller and smaller. Until it was just Mamoru and his friend.

In this situation, Mamoru, who could not rely on his parents for moral support nor to talk to an adult, had in his hands a serious moral choice.

In the face of danger... He could not bear to stand at the front.

Soon, his friend, without anyone to rely upon, was continously harassed in front of his eyes. Unable to do anything, he could only watch as those who had more muscle preyed upon his weaker friend. More than anything.

He wanted courage to stand up.

He wanted the strength to be up front and fight.

After one month, he finally gathered the necessary resolution to stand up and fight. But by then, it was too late. His friend had transferred to another school, and they had lost all contact. They talked one last time, and he realized something.

His friend was no longer the shining, outgoing person who could easily befriend anyone.

He had been betrayed. He could no longer trust anyone. Including him.

By ignoring his silent plea for help, Yamaguchi Mamoru had not only damaged his friend, but also created a hole inside his own heart. And a wish.

-"Please, let me be there. No matter what happens, this time let me make it in time to save him!"

This wish is what would give birth to the knight-like Duel Avatar, Royal Duke. Duke, not in the sense of a noble title, but meaning 'warrior who always, bravely charges first."

Personality: Largely due to the inmense guilt he feels over his actions, Mamoru has become very proactive, to the point where he is the type to butt into conversations and situations where he was not called. Rather than a knight in shining armor, he has become the type to come and save you regardless of your opinion about the matter, as well as an easily gullible person.

Due to his trauma, he has also become the kind of person who can no longer easily indulge in relaxing activities, but feels a compulsive need to seek out persons in trouble and save them, due to how he can no longer bear thinking that someone may be suffering right before his eyes.

Other than that, he's a massive pervert. But, I guess we can happily dismiss this as a minor flaw.

Points of Distinction:

-Street Brawler - Due to his wound of heart, Mamoru has a tendence to get into fights. Besides the obvious boost to skills whenever in combat, he has also built tolerance to pain.

-Visual Novel collectionist - He's the proud owner of a large stash of the rare nowdays 'Physical edition 2D visual novels'.

Explanation: This Duel Avatar was made from the Burst Linker's inability to reach out and save one of his classmates at his moment of need. His realization of his lateness and hopelesness, as well as his inner desire to prevent that from happening again, is what gave birth to its Enhanced Armament, the Spear <>.

Abilities and Armaments:

Gram

A lance fashioned after the kind used by heavy cavalry, which has been appropiately shortened (2.5 metres of length as opposed to the 4 m long used by knights) and made with sturdier materials so it can be used as a primary melee weapon throughout the fight.

It's core purpose is that of an assault weapon, designed for recklessly charging head on against his opponents.

Ability - Soaring Wing

Royal Duke's own ability, designed from his wish of 'making it in time to protect his loved ones'. Rather ironically, his Duel Avatar was designed with a rather mediocre speed as part of his complex of being too slow to save anyone.

However, this means his strengths lie elsewhere.

Soaring Wing is a Limited Activation-Type ability that manifests as a small pair of wings of light appearing in the handle of Gram, which consumes an upkeep of 10% per post to massively boost Royal Duke's speed in straight-line movement as well as the force behind his blows. Agility is boosted by +50 points, and half of that number is added to his DIR.

This ability allows Royal Duke to reach out to where his next fight is, and protect those he feels he has to protect.

okay, from straight forward math you get a boost of 90 to your speed (D rank to A rank) and half of that (45) goes right to direct giving you an overall A rank attack power as well.

uh... if this flies with the A-team then I may just request a major boost myself because this is madness in stat terms you get 135 more points or about five levels of stat increases from one move?

Given that wish, I believe "Joust" could be a more precise word...correct me if I'm wrong too, but I believe that in olden military tactics, spearmen riding horseback were first into battle to mow down the enemy infanteers.

That said, I think I should start a discussion on unlocking abilities by confronting Adversity...

...see, if it is possible to have abilities 'locked' at Level 1, and possibly even unlockable at later levels, then this is a whole new can of worms issue to deal with. What kind of Level Up Bonuses do they get? How are their stats calculated?
