Avatar Explanation, Where to begin?
Hello! I know you're here to get to creating a character; let's get to it. Every post you'll need is in this thread in the following order:
1) What makes the duel avatar?
2) Template
3) Stats
4) Roleplay
5) What's next?
Table of Contents
1) What makes the duel avatar?
Please read this first. Accel World's colour scheme is surprisingly logical in how it matches your character's backstory to a particular hue and shade of colour. What if I want to be a metal? Or a super special Sapphire Snowflake? Trust me, just read.
2) Template
Now that you've got a solid understanding, here's the template. We impose a word limit for certain sections; like a skirt, your application should be long enough to cover the topic, but short enough to be interesting.
3) Stats
Numbers aren't my thing either! But for the sake of fairness, let's get down and dirty. No calculators required!
4) Roleplay
Made it here? Finally! Let's get out there and duel some innocent bystander! But it's dangerous to go alone, read this!
5) What's next?

Re: Avatar Explanation, Where to begin?
So you want to make a duel avatar? Cool! So do I. I hope you've finished the anime though, because it's full of the one thing we need now: information. I will try to use anime examples as much as possible, but there may be spoilers from light novels. In that case, I will try to avoid giving as much context as possible. But not everyone enjoys being spoiled, some more than others. You have been warned.
These sections are a little long. Click on the spoiler tab to open them one by one:
This is probably the #1 question I've seen everywhere. Believe it or not, not even the light novels ever explain what's the deal with these two 'colours,' or if they're even colours at all! What you're about to read is really my own opinion - one formed after years of discussion, research, and speculation, but an opinion nonetheless. You can ignore it, but seeing as our RP is based on it... I suggest you read it.
What colour do you want your avatar to be?
These sections are a little long. Click on the spoiler tab to open them one by one:
- Seven Wishes:
- We've been running this project for a few years now, but I happen to see the same old colours appear: Ultramarine, Crimson, Hunter, Black, White, Cloud, Shadow, Black this White that. Dude. Let me help you by asking a different question: what's the colour that best suits your character?
We're going to assume that your character's backstory has a suitable trauma and that he/she dealt with it somehow. There's seven basic ways in which your character can have reacted, and they fit this spectrum going from Red > Purple > Blue > Cyan > Green > Yellow > Orange:
Distance: You want to bridge the great distance between themselves and something, or you're afraid and shy away from becoming too close to anyone, afraid of having your dark secret exposed. Everything you do or think about is either to keep people away from you or to reach something, someone far away.
Hostile: You have a beef with someone, something. You don't know if you can win, but you'll certainly try. A mix of the determination to one-up him or yourself, and the fear of being beaten down and losing creates an internal conflict.
Force: You don't just dislike being weak, you hate it, doing your best to not look like a wimp or a walking punching bag. You wish you could be like those superheroes that fly, punch missiles, and take a bullet to the face without batting an eyelid - no, you'd love to be.
Guard: Have you ever felt stupid because you fell for a silly prank? Yeah, that's the feeling everyone universally hates. You've responded to that by curling into a shell and toughening yourself up, hoping you either scare away people or are tough enough to take what's coming - or so you look like it.
Pray: To hope that a problem will go away, or that someone else will solve it, by wishing for it. Alternatively, you endure a difficult situation by believing in someone or something that will save you. Your favourite song lyric goes, "There can be miracles, when you believe~"
Deception: Anything but head-on. With your refusal to accept a decision, responsibility, or another person, you keep calm on the surface, but think of other means to get what you want. Even if it means cursing him to slip on a banana peel and break a leg while a T-rex riding a Harley-Davidson chomps his head off, you hope it happens.
Dissociation: Day-dreaming of a place and time that you're happy in, you begin to wish that you have someone or something by your side. People may label you 'air-head', 'klutz,' and so on, but you don't really care at all.
What kind of duel avatar does that wish produce?
- Seven Colours:
- Maybe you're not really thinking about that backstory and history so much, you just want a cool character! Okay then, let's see what floats your boat. For the same seven colours, each wish generally corresponds to this particular type of avatar:
Note that the weakness of a duel avatar is often the strength of the colour directly opposite it. For reference, refer to the colour wheel from Volume 10.
Power: Red types typically attack directly from a long range, or use powerful abilities and armaments to get somewhere they want to go, fast.
Fighter: Purple avatars can use a large variety of weapons, even unconventional direct attacks, as long as they can kick ass and spout one-liners. Their only weakness would be their defense, which is naturally lacking.
Strength: The most stubborn and determined of the lot, they wished to overcome obstacles with their own strength, and Lady Luck has given them precisely the tools for that: lots of muscle, their bodies, and some brains on the side. Blues could be pretty firm believers of "Yelling Increases Your Power," and other variations, none of which last very long in reality.
Protect: With the wish to protect something and the strength to carry it out, avatars that are shades of cyan looks and sound like bodyguards. However, what they have in brawns, they may be lacking in brain, and can't defend well against special attacks.
Defense: Tankiness. Rather than fight head on, your avatar is more suited to reducing the damage you take or recovering Health in some way. Being poor duelists, many green avatars tend to fill a supportive role by their nature.
Indirect: Anything but head-on. With your refusal to accept a decision, responsibility, or another person, you create an avatar that hops and dances around to fight without really fighting: traps, illusions, manipulation.
Command: When you'd rather stay behind and watch from afar, something else has to do the fighting for you. Abilities and/or armaments that create pets, drones, or most other semi-controllable entity. Cannot create another duel avatar. Clones are fine, with conditions.
Metals? Gems? Aqua Current?
- Hobey ho, here we go:
- Metals: Children who chose to suppress part of their memory to forget a painful event.
Erde: Children who choose to accept a painful event (without solving it)
Ah, now we get to the fun part. These are special avatars, special enough to warrant their own chart in the case for metals, and a different explanation in the case of Aqua Current.
Let's talk about metals first.
These are pure metals, or in other words they're elements from your high school periodic table. This means no alloys: bronze, steel, brass, or anything that doesn't appear on that table. This is for a practical reason: in this chart, the metals are organised from left to right in order of decreasing rarity. That puts Gold, Osmium, Rhodium, and Silver on the left, while you have things like Iron, Cobalt, and Manganese on the right.
Metallic avatars are the way they are because they have chosen to not confront their issues, and instead withdrew into themselves. Figuratively speaking, they hide within a shell of trauma and refuse to remember or talk about it, believing that they're to blame. For example, Haruyuki blamed himself for his parents' divorce. Chrome Falcon saw his friend being bullied but was afraid of getting hurt if he helped, so he pretended to not know about it and hoped someone would help his friend.
In metallic avatars, this means they have particularly good defenses against special attacks: Silver Crow is strong against cutting, piercing, heat, corrosion, light, and poison. Chrome Falcon sits in the middle of the chart and is completely immune to corrosion; furthermore, we may infer from the properties of chrome metal that he is also passively resistant to attacks due to a thin layer of protection that forms on his armour.
Erde - the German word for earth.
Erde avatars are neither wholly metal nor colour. Gemstones, water, and coloured minerals fall under this category, including and not limited to: Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Aqua (colourless), Tourmaline. I believe that these avatars are generated from children who after suffering a trauma, tried to get over it by keeping calm and carrying on. The main difference between them and Green avatars is that these children didn't wish to get over their trauma, and neither did they hope for someone else or something to happen and magically make everything better.
Erde avatars are a subset of the colour wheel and the metal colour chart - although they possess special defensive properties, the rest of their avatar's properties are derived from the colour of their avatar per the colour wheel.
So what's an Erde avatar? Frost Horn, a bluish-white fighter, passively freezes the environment around him. The ice on his avatar increases his mass and the horn on his head, making some of his attacks stronger. Tourmaline Shell, a greenish heavyweight who has demonstrated nothing outstanding besides his complete immunity to freezing attacks: due to the pyroelectric property of tourmaline crystals, his armour generates a voltage whenever he is heated or cooled, resulting in his ability to thaw any ice that forms on him.
Aqua Current is the embodiment of pure water, completely colourless according to the colour wheel (I'll get to this in a bit). She demonstrates the abiity to absorb a wide range of attacks by virtue of her pure water armour, and several other properties concerning water. Although she's officially colourless, I presume she's closer to White in terms of avatar properties since she's not great at duelling.
What about White and Black?
This is probably the #1 question I've seen everywhere. Believe it or not, not even the light novels ever explain what's the deal with these two 'colours,' or if they're even colours at all! What you're about to read is really my own opinion - one formed after years of discussion, research, and speculation, but an opinion nonetheless. You can ignore it, but seeing as our RP is based on it... I suggest you read it.
- I gotcha fam:
- The wishes that relate to black and white:
Black: A darker avatar is fixated on something or someone to the point of obsession, gaining skills that lend themselves to duelling and being independent, like how Black is the absence of all light.
White: On the other hand, the lighter your colour is, you're less worried about something and more concerned with how to overcome it with either your own skill or with help. Your strength is less about doing things yourself as it is working with friends and teams, which relates to how White is the addition of all light.
We know the colour wheel is light-based: it's using red, green, and blue as primary colours, and mixing light in those three colours produces white light. A duel avatar is coloured so because of the colour it is reflecting when white light falls upon it. For example, Blue Knight's armour is absorbing all colours of light and reflecting only blue, which is what reaches your eyes.
With this understanding, we derive that a white avatar is reflecting nearly all the light that is falling upon it and absorbing none. A black avatar is reflecting almost zero light and is absorbing all of it. Now let's look at some characters who are nearly white and some who are nearly black, and their respective wishes:
Dusk Taker: a dark purple avatar who is entirely reliant on stealing skills, equipment, and special parts to fight for himself. Dusk Taker is quite useless without having an opponent to fight; in a teamfight, Dusk Taker needs to be in front to get something he can use, but with his paper-thin defense he will melt if he's focused.
And what was Noumi Seiji's wish? To steal everything back from my thieving brother. Years of sibling abuse has warped Noumi's psyche until he couldn't see a positive thing in his brother, and the same thoughts drove him to plan his brother's demise without a second thought.
Blood Leopard: a dark red melee avatar who displays three skills in combat: Shape Change, Mental Bite, and Vital Bite. Shape Change allows her to swap between humanoid and Leopard form at will, Mental Bite drains Special Gauge, and Vital Bite drains health. No matter how you spin it, it makes her a perfect duelist, sustaining herself off her opponent until she is strong enough to end the duel decisively. We don't know what's her wish exactly, but we do know this: even though she's a melee-focused avatar when she's a Red colour, remember the wish that creates a Red avatar: Distance. A Red avatar may want to reach something far away and almost unattainable. It then makes perfect sense because the leopard has the ability to cross great distances quickly, and they're also known to be powerful swimmers and excellent climbers.
Sky Raker: a light blue duel avatar whose entire potential is concentrated in her Enhanced Armament, Gale Thruster. The only skill she uses is when she activates the Thruster to fly 350 metres into the air. It's cool, yeah, but it doesn't really deal damage on it's own, you might be thinking. However, what's devastating is when Sky Raker brings someone along for the ride: maybe a long-ranged red avatar to dish out tons of damage? It's a strategy that's nicknamed the ICBM, named after the weapon of war.
Fuuko had forgotten her wish a little after she received Brain Burst, but she finally remembers it after the events of Volume 5: she didn't just want to fly in the sky, she wanted to go to space and see the stars. In Haruyuki's words, the logical conclusion is that Brain Burst gives her the only appropriate type of equipment that can move in space: a thruster pack.
So we see that the darker avatars are more capable of duelling by themselves, while the lighter avatars seem more chill, they'd like to just do whatever they wish to do, and maybe help others and themselves along the way. We may now link this to the nature of white and black with the following characteristics of black and white avatars:
Black: The more your colour is saturated with black indicates that it is a damage-dealer, increasingly looking like a one-man army that relies on their own skills and strengths to win fights.
White: On the other hand, the lighter your colour is with white, your strength is less about doing things yourself as it is working with friends and teams - helping out others in your little special way while you stay in the back and avoid fighting entirely.
Re: Avatar Explanation, Where to begin?
Metals: children who chose to suppress part of their memory to forget a painful event
Only elements count as metals, so Bronze, Steel, Brass etc aren't allowed.
Erde: children who choose to accept a painful event (without solving it)
Gemstones, water, and coloured minerals fall under this category, including and not limited to: Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Aqua (colourless), Tourmaline.
Metal Characteristics
This has resulted in metallic avatars who are particularly defensive against special attacks: Silver Crow is strong against cutting, piercing, heat, corrosion, and poison. Chrome Falcon sits in the middle of the chart and is completely immune to corrosion; we may infer from the properties of chrome that he is also passively resistant to attacks due to a thin layer of protection that forms on his armour.
Erde Characteristics
Avatars that are neither wholly metal nor colour are termed Erde, the German word for 'earth'. I believe that these avatars are generated from children who after suffering a trauma, tried to get over it by keeping calm and carrying on.
Erde avatars are a subset of the colour wheel and the metal colour chart - although they possess special defensive properties, the rest of their avatar's properties are derived from the colour of their avatar per the colour wheel.

While Frost Horn freezes the stage and their opponents, Tourmaline Shell takes them out unfettered.
Aqua Current is the embodiment of pure water, completely colourless according to the colour wheel (even Graphite Edge is a dark blue, not colourless). She demonstrates the abiity to absorb a wide range of attacks by virtue of her pure water armour, and several other properties concerning water. Although she's officially colourless, I presume she's closer to White in terms of avatar properties since she's not great at duelling.

Re: Avatar Explanation, Where to begin?
Remember to include [WIP] in your topic title if you're not finished! While we are really enthusiastic about helping out with characters, duel avatars, and writing in general, we'll respect that tag and refrain from commenting unless you'd like to hear some.
Some really great resources to look for pictures:
Reddit: Imaginary Mechs, Imaginary Armour, Imaginary Robotics. Reddit often has reposts from Deviantart and Artstation, so it's the easiest crowd-sourced imageboard you can find.
Safebooru: tags: mecha + no_humans. But just because it's 'safe' doesn't mean it won't have swimsuits and fanservice-y stuff. Beware! Some good examples: fei-yen by eblmeka, Eva 02 by Studio Khara, and Blue Destiny 01 by megane man.
Deviantart: You're going to have to search hard for this one. I lean towards artwork like this, this, and this, but if you'd like to try a non-humanoid avatar like Saxe Lauder, go for it!
Personally, I don't recommend Gundam mecha because they hardly fit the duel avatar theme we're going with here. While that's not to say we're specifically looking for anything that isn't Gundam, I hope that the above examples give you a good guide about what we're looking for. And you don't need their wings.
