Lightning Gadget Vs. Green Guardian

The silence of the night was shattered when on top of a building's rooftop a shimmer of bits surged and Lightning Gadget appeared on top of the roof.

Lightning Gadget hummed as he looked up at the moon "hmm, first a field, then a beach and now this, a moonlight filled stage." He scanned the area "well this time I'll try a different opening move."

[Destination]

*BASHIIN*

Time seemed to stop and the world turned blue. As Tatesuke looked around in confusion, the blue world faded to black, and the feeling of new data streaming into his brain pumped adrenaline into his mind.

"I didn't even press it...what's going on!"

It seemed to be a loading screen, and the darkness quickly cleared. Tatesuke blinked, and looked around--


Deserted.


That was the only word he could use to desribe his surroundings. He was still at the corner of the traffic junction, but now there was nothing - no chairs, no shopfronts, no people, nothing.

It was as if the world had been wiped clean of civilisation itself, Tabula Rasa on the scale of a country.

Words suddenly appeared in an AR screen, or at least Tatesuke thought it was a screen:

HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER!!

...what the hell?

That wasn't the only effect that appeared. A timer fell from the sky on chains, complete with clinking sound effects. Two bars appeared by either side of it, and as Tatesuke squinted at them in the corner of his vision:

GREEN GUARDIAN

LIGHTNING GADGET

"What in the flying f**k is this program--"

Bewildered, Tatesuke reached out to swipe the screen away, and then saw his arm wasn't the same.


It was green.


A deep green colour, brighter than grass, deeper than emeralds. Green that seemed to soothe and comfort upon the mere sight of it. His whole body, as he looked, was coloured in this fresh green colour.

And it was thickly armoured. No matter how he looked, this avatar resembled a mecha from a manga or anime with its formidable plating. Moving his arms to test the weight, it was certainly weighty, but it felt strong and natural--

--as if this avatar had been made for him.

A new phrase appeared in Tatesuke's vision:

FIGHT!!

From Green Guardian's corner Gadget was about one street south on top of a building. From his vantage point, Gadget could see a green mecha type avatar like him but instead of it being human height and slim like he was, This mecha was larger, bulkier, and wielded what appeared to be a shield shaped like a christian cross.

Gadget hummed as he studied Guardian "what was that Poem that Rose came up with to tell the different traits of colors." He muttered "Red is for run for they want to go fast and far, Blue is for Beat for they want to pound you like a drum, Yellow is for yelling because they drive you nuts. Purple is for perplex because you never know what they will do next, Orange is for Outrageous because they act high above you and Green is for Guard because they withstand against all."

Gadget exhaled after he remembered the poem "Well might as well say hello to my opponent." He ran across the rooftop and jumped to the next building easily clearing the small gap between the buildings. He had about five more buildings to cross.

[Destination]

With both his outstretched arms, and an AR screen in his vision, Tatesuke quickly arrived at several conclusions:

One - This virtual avatar had not been made with any ordinary editor.

Two - The timer he could see at the very top of the screen was ticking down in seconds, from 1780. In other words, there was a time limit of roughly 30 minutes.

Three - The two gauges must indicate something; combined with the timer, the likely conclusion was a health gauge for Green Guardian and Lightning Gadget.

Four - The large green shield that had appeared in his hands as well was likely his, and therefore-

Five - The name of this avatar Tatesuke controls currently is Green Guardian.

Footsteps echoed loudly from far behind him. The sound, whatever it was, carried very clearly in this VR environment, startling him. Tatesuke grabbed the green shield in his right and turned on the spot;

Or at least, he tried. The shield was bloody heavy, much heavier than it appeared as a thin cross made from green metal. Using both hands, Tatesuke lifted the shield, and with difficulty set it down, albeit too hard.

The shield missed his toe, fortunately, but the weight and resulting force it created shattered a tile on the street where he stood. With a loud crack, the sound echoed against other buildings far away.

Wincing at his clumsiness, Tatesuke took up a position behind his shield, looking out for the other avatar that surely must be here somewhere, the challenger Lightning Gadget.

Gadget heard the resounding crack and came to a stop at the edge of the building. He looked at his opponent and saw the crack that had formed when the opponent had dropped his shield roughly because he was having a hard time moving it. Gadget could judge by the somewhat clumsy movement that Green Guardian wasn't used to wielding his shield which mean this was most likely his first acceleration duel. Gadget had been told that there was no real tutorial in the game and someone who is new could easily be taken advantage of but Gadget wasn't one to take advantage of those who had not done anything to him.

Gadget hummed in thought "Perhaps I could chat up my opponent." He thought. He had heard the crack so voices could most likely carry. He relaxed himself and turned causal "Greetings Mr. Guardian, welcome to the accelerated world." He called out in a friendly tone.

[Destination]

"Greetings Mr. Guardian, welcome to the accelerated world."

...accelerated...world? Is that the name given to this VR environment?

From some distance away, Tatesuke heard the clear voice of a young boy, probably not much older than he is, or perhaps even younger. Scanning the streets, he looked around left and right for the voice--

Step.

--above!

Turning his eyes upwards, Tatesuke finally found his opponent; a whitish-yellow coloured avatar, again resembling some exotic mecha straight from a manga.

"...Lightning Gadget...is that your name?"

His voice sounding far calmer than he felt, Tatesuke let the silence of the environment carry his question all the way from the ground to the top of the small building where Gadget stood. The avatar winked, tilted his head, gave a casual shrug and bent his legs.

"The name's Gadget. Lightning-- Gadget!"

And he jumped from the roof of a three story building to the floor to make a grand entrance...

*BAM*

...not bad. That one-liner, that movement...it's too natural to be a computer-controlled AI.

As Gadget got up from the broken tile his feet had crushed and dusted himself off, Tatesuke felt the awful truth hit him.

This is a duelling game between two people.

And to win, one of us must die here.

(eh... *about to blow a whistle about controlling another person character as it's against the rules but looks over the scene and hums in thought* alright Tusjecht I'll let it slide this time because it's generally what I would do, but don't pull my character's strings again alright, it's just not cool)

Gadget lightly dusted himself off from the jump. He had felt some minor pain from the landing but didn't take any damage. He then thought aloud "Memo to self, avoid jumping from buildings taller then 3 stories, jumping from such a height may damage player." He then noted his Special Gauge had charged 5% from the jump and noted he had shattered a tile of sidewalk and put a connection together special gauge about environment damage. "Second memo, destroying the environment through player action seems to charge the special gauge." He hummed in thought then remembered he had been talking with Guardian before he had decided to make an jump in entrance. "Pardon me Green Guardian, just making some mental notes for future game play. Without a tutorial battle, one would find themselves nearly lost about the rules of this game."

[Destination]

Damage? Environment? Special Gauge? Game?

"So...Lightning Gadget...this is just a game?"

Tatesuke set aside his shield. Now that he is accustomed to the weight, it now is no issue to lift it in one hand, albeit using his body to compensate; he shifts the shield to the side.

Examining the avatar called Lightning Gadget in detail, he noticed that it seemed much, muh more lightly armoured that his own avatar. All over it, little blue lights shone and blinked, giving off the feeling of a futuristic, flashy advertisment.

"Yeah, it's just a game," Gadget replied. "To win, you have to reduce your opponent's HP, and when you do so, you win Burst Points."

"Burst- what? You play to win points?"

Tatesuke sighed. With so much he didn't know, and things he didn't know he didn't know, he probably needed to ask Upperclassman Tsuboi in detail. In great detail.

"Never mind that, so I take it that you have to beat your opponent up to win, then?"

[Guest]

"That's the basics," Gadget replied "defeat your opponent before they defeat you. The problem is I am also under that requirement so don't hold it against me as I try to win as well because burst points are quite valuable to my plan." He took a light footed stance designed for him to dodge attacks. His top speed wasn't the greatest in the world but as long as he kept an eye on his opponent. He was sure that he could dodge anything melee that his opponent threw at him

[Destination]

Tatesuke looked at his opponent adopt that silly stance, as though waiting for something to happen.

"..."

If this avatar had a stomach, it was churning uncomfortably. Much as Tatesuke knew he had to fight...he couldn't bring himself to actually do something about it.

Because...when people fight, someone gets hurt.

Lifting the shield back to face Lightning Gadget. Since his avatar was a full head taller than Gadget, he peeked out from behind the top of the cross-shaped shield.

I'd rather let Lightning Gadget move first.

Lightning Gadget smirked as he saw Guardian take a brick wall like stance with his shield and relaxed his stance. "You know just hiding behind that shield is not going to get you to win the game." He pointed upward to the top of the screen where the timer was counting down. "If that timer hits zero the one with the most amount of damage loses even if it's only by a small margin of hit points from a single attack like this one." He stepped towards Guardian only to grab onto Guardian's shield with his left hand and use it as a hold to pivot around the wall and lash out with a kick of his right foot towards the back of Guardian's knee's

[Destination]

CLANG.

Tatesuke winced as his knee stung from the kick. Apparently pain was replicated in the application as well. Looking up at the health gauges...

"...eh?"

No change in the gauge could be seen. Lightning Gadget too, was staring at the gauges with his mouth open in surprise.

"...the heck...lemme try that again!"

CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.

Lightning Gadget continued to kick Tatesuke's knee to no avail.

"You've- gotta- be- kidding- me--"

After a fourth kick, Tatesuke hit the limit of his patience. A mysterious program, a less-than-happy visit to his mother, a strange VR environment, and a weird mecha is here kicking his leg.

"Had enough tries?"

Mockingly, Tatesuke reached out- and grabbed Lightning Gadget's lower leg. Besides being surprisingly light, it was also smaller than it seemed, and Tatesuke's fingers wrapped all the way around the slender calf. He then dragged a shocked and protesting Lightning Gadget-- upside down, and with apparent ease!

Gadget had been surprised that his kicks did absolutely nothing to Green Guardian. He knew he was a specialist according to his abilities but even then he thought he could deal at least one point of damage per kick. His bafflement was compounded when he was easily picked up like a rag doll and held upside down by Guardian's grip after being told if he had enough tries. He made a couple of protests but then just stopped struggling knowing he was caught for the moment.

"okay third memo to myself, Green means guard for a reason. Melee attacks from a non physical fighter are useless against them." Gadget exhaled then just hung upside down and crossed his arms "hey Guardian I really don't want to have to pull out my special this early in the fight but I will if you don't let me go because I'll let myself go."

Tatesuke may well do so under different circumstances. In the real world, he never fought physically - and has never needed to, not since....a certain time long ago.

But now, he was in a confusing situation, with very little in the way of explanation, and above all, frustration. He was being made to do something he could never bring himself to do.

To hurt someone.

Gnashing his teeth furiously, Tatesuke spat out his disgust; not merely at his opponent, but this game as a whole.

"I'm not going easy on you! Not today!"

Clenching his left fist tightly, the leg of Lightning Gadget cracks. His body bends backwards as the pain feeds back into his brain--

Gadget grunted as he took damage on his leg (HP: 90 KG: 10) but fought through the pain to swing himself so that his hands grabbed onto Guardian's arm like he was a monkey bar. "Caught Leg as Gadget." He called out and with a click Gadget's caught leg released itself from Gadget's body causing him to swing on Guardian's arms like a weight that had just been released and using the momentum he let go and and he caught himself on his one leg, nearly lost his balance but grabbed onto the nearby wall to hold himself upright against it. Now free he looked at Guardian with a smirk. "You can proceed to crush my leg all you want Guardian but it would be kinda pointless.

[Destination]

"But it actually is, isn't it? Because it's still your leg...you couldn't say that it really is no point in destroying it."

With that, Guardian clenched his fist once more, and the leg part apparently now squirming with a mind of its own, shattered into pieces. In the gauges above his sight in the AR screen, a thin green bar was filled by a small fraction for both sides, and a large blue bar above Lightning Gadget's name dropped by a small bit. The owner of the leg seemed to wince too at the destruction of his body part.

Somewhat calming down now, Tatesuke began to compile the things he just saw:

Lightning Gadget has an ability to break his body into separate pieces.

These pieces should be mobile, because the leg squirmed before I crushed it.

The word 'lightning' in his name...it must mean 'electricity.' Is the 'special' that he talked about earlier a giant electric shock...?



And therefore, I should not be letting any of those body parts get in contact with me again.

"So...what's your next move, Lightning Gadget?"

Turning his body slightly to face Lightning Gadget, his shield is off to his right side, ready to come back to defend against anything else; his opponent has already noted that melee blows against his body is useless, and shouldn't be trying that again.

"Though I do want to say this...that you climbing over me twice now, it's becoming irritating."

"So...what's your next move, Lightning Gadget?"

Gadget was stunned slightly Guardian had just crushed his leg like a tooth pick. Gadget's overall HP had  dropped by 25% (HP: 75 KG: 25) the 10% he took before and the 15% he took when his leg was crushed to pieces.

"Though I do want to say this...that you climbing over me twice now, it's becoming irritating." His opponent remarked

Gadget gave a scoff and hopped over to a small column that marked where a mailbox in the real world had been "You think that was irritating, I'm just getting started. Head Gadget Removal."

Gadget's arms reached up, detached his head with a click and placed it on a column.

Gadget said "now let's how annoying you find the rest of my gadgets. Body Gadgets mobilize, Formation Launcher.

Gadget's body parts shift his leg their into their various parts then took a formation. His torso was laid down on it's back then the two hand less arms took up angled positions on the body like they were on a lever and the two hands loaded themselves into the two shoulder cups. The foot stood at ready

"Fire one!" Gadget shouted

Gadget's foot hopped on the first arm limb and the force provided launched his right hand in the direction of Green Guardian. The hand open flat and it's fingertips sparked with electricity signalling that if it touched something on Guardian that a nasty shock would be delivered. The conduction move was active and ready for a discharge (KG: 0)

now let's how annoying you find the rest of my gadgets. Body Gadgets mobilize, Formation Launcher.

---not a move; an arrangement!

Tensing his body, Tatesuke bent his body slightly, reducing the area of his avatar facing the curious arrangement of Lightning Gadget's limbs;

"Fire one!" Gadget shouted

The hand open flat and it's fingertips sparked with electricity signalling that if it touched something on Guardian that a nasty shock would be delivered.

Even if Tatesuke didn't see Lightning Gadget's green gauge drop to nothing, he could already see that the flying hand meant trouble this time--

Bracing his feet, Tatesuke pulled his shield with all his strength, dragging it through the tiles on which it rested on. The shield shifted, and just barely managed to knock the flying hand aside--

Not yet. Barely clinging to the edge of his shield, the hand held for a split second, before dropping to the ground just below. The hand raced towards Tatesuke's foot-- and Tatesuke trapped it under his left foot.

Looking up at Lightning Gadget's head, Tatesuke called out:

"Um, so you're going to throw pieces of yourself at me? That's...cute..."

Gadget smirked "uh Guardian, what happens when you touch something that has electricity surging through it."

Electricity surged through Gadget's hand and into Guardian's foot and through his body. Gadget hoped that the electricity would cause Guardian to fall back due to the pain and release his hand from under the foot.

[Destination]

*BIRI BIRI*

--GAAAH!

Pain rocked Tatesuke's senses, but he still tightly held on to his shield--

Silence. The spark of electricity stopped and Tatesuke recovered, and his eyes flicked to the gauges--

The blue bar above his name had decreased by huge proportion this time.

"So..." Tatesuke breathed heavily. "You're serious, huh."

Lifting his right foot off the ground, Tatesuke placed all of his weight on the hand under his left foot. With a crackling sound and blue sparks-type damage effect, the hand struggled- and burst into stardust as it too was destroyed.

"I don't blame you for attacking me, since this is the nature of this program. I only pity you for having to bear my anger..."

Looking at the timer which had just passed 1610 seconds, Tatesuke continued:

"I don't have anything against you personally. I just want to finish this and get back to ask my senior about this program."

Raising his shield up and slamming it into the ground for emphasis, Tatesuke watched his own green bar rise by another small fraction. He steeled his body and spat out his last sentence:

"But now that I am truly pissed in a long time, I will crush you limb by limb."

One of us must die in this game.

I'll give it my best if I even have the slightest chance of dying.

Tatesuke clicked on his name, and examined the menu that appeared, describing his moves:

Arm Lock, a normal move which locked a limb of the opponent in his grasp, and

Discharge, a special move which released energy all around him in a three metre radius.

Further examination of the description revealed that Tatesuke had to clench his fist to his chest to 'charge,' before swinging it down to activate the move. He read that all in a flash and closed the menu. Glaring at Lightning Gadget, he involuntarily clenched his left fist, and lifted his shield off the ground by a single centimetre, ready to block.

"I'm ready, Lightning Gadget. Are you?"

Gadget grunted as his hand was crushed just as easily taking 15 more damage points (HP: 60 KG: 15) He grinned through it figuring that would be the case that his hand would only get one attack but it counted. They were now even in HP and Gadget had a slight lead because he had managed to gather 40 KG, 25 of which had been used for one conduction move. He just need ten more points to be able to get another conduction attack ready but he needed a plan a plan so that even if his hand was destroyed afterwards, the rest of his body parts would be out of range of Guardian and for that Gadget needed to get some height like on top of a rooftop." He then heard Guardian's threat

"But now that I'm truly pissed in a long time, I will crush you limb by limb. I'm ready Lightning Gadget are you" His opponent rumbled in anger

Gadget chuckled "Ready and Gone man. Body Parts scramble and hide, foot get me out of here."

The Arms, remaining hand, and torso started moving away from Guardian. The torso doing what appeared to be army crawl to get away while the arms worm crawled away.

His foot hopped over to where Gadget's head and Gadget rolled his head off the statue and into the hip cup

Gadget grinned "don't underestimate the power of my gadget limbs," He stated "they may be small and can be crushed easily by you but you will see that the small can be mighty if used correctly"

The head foot started lightly hopping away to cross the junction with the rest of the body parts and the left hand followed the head.

"Okay parts here's the plan."  Gadget projected

Gadget's plan:

"Ready and Gone man. Body Parts scramble and hide, foot get me out of here."

Having seen the rough strategy of Gadget, Tatesukr could now predict what Gadget would attempt.

With that, he steps away, backing into the center of the traffic junction. It is a huge space even for his avatar, since it's a four-lane road.

With this kind of distance, even if Gadget attempts another launching attack, Tatesuke will have more than enough time to react. Slamming his shield into the ground, Tatesuke lets the sharp CRACK of breaking tile echo throughout the silent stage.

I can't hear a single peep...he must be moving steathily.

Several more cracks suddenly were heard, long after Tatesuke's shield had stopped ringing. Indeed, Gadget was charging his own gauge, little bits at a time.

Gadget was indeed charging his own gauge. Most of his parts were making a lot of noise by breaking objects and charging KG then moving to a different location and repeating the action. (KG: 45) However Gadget's head and foot and remaining hand were not among them and were actually making their way back towards Green Guardian by means of stealth in the shadows only moving when noise was being made and when Guardian wasn't looking in their general direction. The head was on the left side of the street while the hand was the right side of the street. Since the compass always pointed towards the head no one would be able to tell unless they used their eyes to see where the rest of Gadget's parts were.

[Destination]

More scraping noises reached his ears as Tatesuke stood in the street. Looking at the guide cursor, it pointed to his left; but in this quiet stage, more noises could be heard to his right.

"So he's surrounding me, huh."

Clenching his fist, Tatesuke brings up his left hand to his chest; his Special Gauge drops considerably in the process. With his right hand, he further pounds the stage with his shield and breaks more tile.

He then places his shield to his right, relying on his periphal vision to keep an eye on both sides. This ensures he has sufficient reaction time if he is flanked...and Tatesuke hopes he can turn around fast enough to react to a back attack, though, since that was the direction he had headed to, it isn't possible that Gadget's limbs have managed to move that far behind him.

Gadget noted that Guardian's special gauge dropped considerably. The only reason for that would be that a special attack was being charged. Gadget stopped his advances and his hand and head kept cover by statues that were about 5 meters away from Guardian. The other parts broke another object in the distance giving Gadget enough KG for two conduction attacks if his hand could deal an attack return to the body then go out for a second attack. The only problem with having a close range special move was that if an opponent could protect himself at close range with an actual attack then Gadget wouldn't be able to get in range without taking damage and losing limbs. Taking damage right now with no ability to deal damage back would be pointless. His opponent was obviously aware that Gadget was within several meters of him so the question was. Who would make a move first Gadget or Guardian. As it stood the two could wait for the timer to run out and the battle would end at a draw but then he remembered Guardian's threat and decided to use his words against him.

"You know it's funny Guardian, you talk big but you really lack action. I thought you said you were going to crush me limb by limb." Gadget taunted
